✨ French vs. American Wines - The Rematch!

Join the American Club of Brussels for a truly special evening as we recreate the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris wine tasting, where California wines shocked the world by outscoring France’s finest!

Our sommelier for the evening, Brandon Mitchner of Terre Mieli Cieli, will guide us through a friendly rivalry of French vs. American reds, whites, and sparklings — including Champagne, of course — paired beautifully with appetizers, a main course, and dessert.

Hosted once again by Donna and Thatcher Scharpf in their stunning Etterbeek home, this promises to be a night of discovery, laughter, and lively debate — will France reclaim the crown, or will America still reign supreme?

Background on the Judgment of Paris:

The Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, also known as the Judgment of Paris, was a wine competition in Paris to commemorate the US Bicentennial.  The judges tasted top California cabernets vs. French Bordeaux, and California chardonnays vs. French white Burgundies.  Much to everyone's surprise, these top French wine tasting judges chose either one, or both, California wines over the French ones.  The French judges' explaination was that the French wines were on the young side, and if tasted again in 30 years would win. Who knows for sure, but this tasting achieved the organizer's goal of putting American wines squarely on the map for fine wines!
